Nightjar

Privacy policy

Last updated 30 October 2026. Applies to the Nightjar Android app (dev.machado001.nightjar, “Nightjar: Snore Recorder” on Google Play) and this website.

In one paragraph

Nightjar records your nights with your phone’s microphone and keeps the recordings on your phone. Snoring is found on the phone, the score is worked out on the phone, and the recordings are never uploaded. There is no account and no Nightjar server, and the app shows no ads. The app does send anonymous usage statistics to Google Firebase, reads a few settings from Firebase Remote Config, and talks to Google Play, through RevenueCat, for the Nightjar Pro subscription. None of these ever contains audio or your notes. This page lists exactly what that involves, who processes it, and how to delete it.

The microphone

Nightjar asks for the microphone permission (Android’s RECORD_AUDIO) because recording your night is what it does. It uses the microphone only while a night is being recorded, from a foreground service that keeps a notification on screen for as long as it runs (“Recording · since …”), and you can stop it from that notification or from the app. If you set a start delay, the microphone opens only when the delay ends. Just before a night starts, the app listens for about a second and a half to check that the microphone can hear at all (for example, that it isn’t switched off in quick settings); that check is held in memory and not saved.

It never records in the background without that notification, and it never records anything you haven’t started. You can remove the permission at any time in Settings → Apps → Nightjar → Permissions → Microphone; the app then can’t record a night.

What stays on your device

Everything below is stored in the app’s private storage on your phone. Other apps can’t read it, and Nightjar never sends it anywhere.

  • Recordings. Nightjar does not keep the whole night as audio. It keeps short clips: every second it classed as snoring, and every second that stood out from the room’s own background level by 10 dB or more (sleep talk, a cough, a door), each with a couple of seconds either side. Quiet stretches are not kept as audio.
  • A log of each night. For every second, how loud it was and whether it was classed as snoring; when the recording started, stopped or paused, and why (for example, that Android closed the app). This is what the morning screen, the strip and the score are drawn from.
  • Your nights. For each night: its start and end times, time recorded, snoring time, score, gaps, and each snoring episode’s time, length and loudness; the episodes you marked “Not snoring”; the remedies you noted, including any you named yourself; and the notes you left on the timeline.
  • Settings: your start delay and playback speed; whether you said you are recording yourself or your partner; whether onboarding is done; the remedies you picked for tonight (kept for a day); when you last opened the app; whether the first-morning purchase screen has been shown; and a counter the app uses to decide when to ask for a Google Play review.
  • Files you save. A backup (a zip with your nights, with or without the recordings, as you choose) and the PDF report for a doctor go where you choose to save them, or to the app you share them with. From then on they are yours, and Nightjar doesn’t read them again unless you import a backup. The PDF contains figures and dates but no audio; while you share it, it is written to the app’s cache.

The recording notification and the reminder the day before a free trial ends are shown by your phone; nothing about them is sent anywhere.

No cloud backup

Nightjar opts out of Android’s automatic backup (allowBackup="false"), so Android does not copy its recordings or data to your Google account. That also means a new phone starts empty: to move your nights, use Settings → Export a backup in the app and Import a backup on the new phone. Where you keep that file, including any cloud folder you pick, is your choice and is covered by that service’s own terms.

What leaves your device

Nightjar uses Google Firebase Analytics to understand whether the app works and which features are used, Firebase Remote Config for a few settings, and RevenueCat with Google Play Billing for the subscription. These send:

  • Usage events that Nightjar logs: that a night was started and with what start delay; that a night was completed, with the minutes recorded, the number of gaps, the longest gap in seconds and whether it reached five hours; that a gap happened, with its cause as a short code (for example “low memory”) and its length in seconds; that an episode was played and from where (the loudest, a log row or the strip); that an episode was marked “Not snoring”; that a remedy was noted, as the name of a built-in remedy or simply “custom” for one you named yourself; that a note was added (never what it says); that a report was exported and how many nights it held; that a backup was exported or imported; which onboarding step was seen and that onboarding was completed; that the purchase screen was shown or closed and from which feature; that a purchase completed, failed or was restored, or a free trial started; that the review prompt was shown; and, if billing can’t start, a short reason. Nightjar also sets one user property: whether you are recording yourself or your partner. Audio, your notes, your remedy names and the clock times of your nights are never part of an event.
  • Events Firebase records by itself, such as the first open, sessions and app updates, with the device model, Android version, app version, language and an approximate country derived from the network connection.
  • An app instance identifier that Firebase uses to tell one installation from another. It is not linked to your name or email. The Advertising ID permission is removed from this app, and Firebase’s advertising-ID collection is switched off.
  • Remote Config downloads a few app settings at start, such as whether nights after the first need Nightjar Pro and the address of this policy, using a Firebase installation identifier.
  • Purchase and subscription status. Google Play handles the payment; RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt under an anonymous app user ID, so the app knows whether Nightjar Pro is active and you can restore it on another device. We never see your payment details.

The app also includes Firebase App Check (Play Integrity) through code shared by our apps; Nightjar does not use it today. Nightjar does not include a crash-reporting SDK. If you have allowed your phone to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google Play may show us crash and performance statistics that do not identify you.

If your phone shows the app in Japanese, its Japanese typeface is downloaded by Google Play services, the way any app’s downloadable font is; it contains no information about you.

On Google’s own test devices (the Play pre-launch report), Nightjar turns analytics off so robots are not counted.

This data is used to fix faults and to decide what to improve. It is not sold, and it is not used for advertising.

Processors

  • Google LLC: Firebase Analytics, Remote Config (and the unused App Check), Google Play Billing, Google Play services fonts, and the Google Play in-app review card (Firebase privacy, Google privacy policy). A review you write in that card goes to Google Play under your Google account; Nightjar never sees it.
  • RevenueCat, Inc.: manages the subscription and its status (RevenueCat privacy policy).
  • Cloudflare, Inc.: serves this website.

Health information

Recordings of your sleep and your snoring can be sensitive. That is why they never leave your phone unless you export them yourself. Nightjar is not a medical device: it records and measures snoring sounds, and it can’t diagnose anything. If you gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very tired by day, talk to a doctor.

Deleting your data

This section applies to Nightjar: Snore Recorder (dev.machado001.nightjar), published on Google Play by machado001.

Data on your device (recordings, night logs, scores, marks, remedies, notes and settings): delete every night at once with Settings → Delete all nights in the app (your own remedy names stay until you clear the app), or remove everything with Settings → Apps → Nightjar → Storage → Clear storage, or by uninstalling the app. Backups and reports you saved or shared stay where you put them; delete them there.

Data held by our processors (usage events and app instance identifiers in Firebase Analytics; purchase records and the anonymous app user ID in RevenueCat): email machadowg@gmail.com with the subject “Nightjar data deletion”. Because the app has no account, it helps to say roughly when you used the app and on which device model. We delete the data we can associate with your request and confirm by reply within 30 days. Firebase Analytics data is also deleted automatically when the project’s retention period runs out. Purchase records that Google Play and RevenueCat must keep for tax, fraud-prevention and accounting reasons are kept as long as the law requires, then deleted. Cancelling Nightjar Pro is done in Google Play and does not by itself delete any data.

Children

Nightjar is made for adults and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the LGPD, the APPI or the CCPA to access, correct, delete or export your data, and to complain to your data protection authority. Write to the address below and say which app you are writing about; requests are answered within 30 days.

Terms

Nightjar has no terms of service of its own. Your use of the app and your subscription are covered by the Google Play Terms of Service.

This website

This site runs no JavaScript (its content security policy forbids scripts entirely), sets no cookies and loads nothing from other sites: its fonts are served from this domain. Cloudflare, which serves it, sees each request and the IP address it came from, as any web host does.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and earlier versions remain in the history of the repository this site is built from.
