How to know if you snore, even if you sleep alone

“Do I snore?” is an odd question to have to ask, because the one person who can’t answer it is you. Maybe a partner says you do and you doubt it, or you sleep alone and someone on a trip made a joke. Here is how to know if you snore, for sure.

Short answer

You can’t tell whether you snore from how you feel, because you are asleep when it happens. Ask someone who has heard you, and ask specific questions: when, how loud, how often. If you sleep alone, or don’t believe them, record one whole night on your phone and listen to the loudest stretch in the morning. One night answers “do I snore?”; a few nights show how much.

Why you can’t tell if you snore

Snoring happens while you are asleep, so you aren’t there to hear it. Popular-science explainers on this question, such as Live Science’s and BBC Science Focus’s, describe the sleeping brain as tending to tune out sounds you make yourself. Treat that as an explanation, not settled science; the practical point stands either way.

That is why so many people are sure they don’t snore until they hear a recording. It is also why the honest answer to “do I snore?” is never a feeling. It is either a witness or a recording.

Ask someone, and ask the right questions

If you share a bed or a room, the other person already knows the answer. “Yeah, you snore” is not much to go on, though, and it tends to start a disagreement rather than end one. Ask for detail instead:

  • How often? Every night, most nights, or only now and then?
  • When in the night? As soon as you fall asleep, or in the early hours?
  • How loud? Something they can sleep through, or loud enough to keep them awake or send them to another room?
  • In what position? Mostly on your back, or on your side as well?
  • After what? Worse after a drink, a late meal or when you have a cold?

Their answers give you a picture, but it is still their memory of a night they were trying to sleep through. People who are kept awake tend to remember the worst of it. If you want to hear it for yourself, or there is nobody to ask, you need a recording.

Clues you might notice in the morning

Lists of “signs you snore” mention things like waking with a dry mouth or a sore throat. They are clues, not answers. A clue can make you curious, but it can’t tell you whether you snore, how often or how loud. Only listening can.

Some morning feelings are a reason to see a doctor rather than to keep guessing. Nightjar puts it this way, in the app: “If you gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very tired by day, talk to a doctor.”

How to find out if you snore when you sleep alone

Record one whole night. It takes no equipment beyond the phone you already have, and it gives you the one thing nobody can argue with: the sound.

  1. Pick a normal night. Not the night after a party, not when you have a cold, unless that is the night you want to hear.
  2. Use an app that records with the screen off and keeps going until you stop it. A plain voice recorder works if it keeps running, but leaves you hours of audio to search.
  3. Put the phone on the bedside table, face down, within arm’s reach. Not under the pillow, which muffles the sound.
  4. Let the app run unrestricted in Android’s battery settings, so it isn’t closed in the night. How to record your snoring on Android walks through placement and this setting step by step.
  5. In the morning, check the whole night was recorded, then listen to the loudest part first.

A snore recorder does the searching for you. Nightjar, the one I make, listens for snoring on the phone as it records and keeps each snoring stretch as a clip on a timeline of your night. Your first full night, three hours or more, is free, and so is playing it back.

What one recorded night tells you

The morning answers the question in one line. Here is the worked night from the home page, recorded from 23:41 to 06:52:

What the morning showsThis nightWhat it answers
Recorded7 h 11 min, no gapsWas the whole night heard?
Snoring episodes12Do I snore at all?
Snoring time1 h 04 min, 15 % of the nightHow much?
Loudnessquiet, medium or loud, per episodeHow loud, against your own room?
Snore score34One number to compare with other nights

Then listen. “Play the loudest” plays the loudest snore of the night, and every episode plays at 1×, 1.5× or 2×, so a dozen of them takes a few minutes. Loudness is measured against your own room rather than in decibels, because a phone microphone isn’t calibrated.

Before you believe the number, check that what was caught really is you. A fan, a cat or a partner can be counted as snoring. Mark any of those “Not snoring” and they leave the snoring time and the score: on the night above, marking the three quiet minutes at 00:12 as a fan takes it to 1 h 01 min and a score of 33. Is it snoring or the fan? goes through how to tell by ear.

And if you don’t snore, the morning says that too: “No snoring was heard.” That is a real answer, as long as the night was recorded in full.

I snore. What now?

One night is a snapshot. Snoring changes from night to night with sleeping position, alcohol, a cold or how tired you are, so a single loud night or a single quiet one says little about your usual nights. If the question has moved from “do I snore?” to “how much, and does anything change it?”, record a few more nights and write down what was different about each.

Recording every night after the first is part of Nightjar Pro, a weekly or yearly subscription through Google Play that you can cancel any time in Google Play. It also compares nights with and without something you are trying, and only says one side is quieter when the difference is bigger than your ordinary night-to-night spread.

Nightjar records snoring sounds. It can’t diagnose anything. If you gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very tired by day, talk to a doctor. Recordings stay on your phone; the privacy policy lists exactly what the app sends.

Nightjar: stop guessing, listen
